Documents Required for PAN Card

Applying for a Permanent Account Number is a very simple process. However, since PAN is all about having a centralized monitoring mechanism for your financial and economic activities related to your status as a taxpayer, the supporting documents that you may need to submit to establish your identity, authenticate your date of birth, and validate your home or residence address are very important. To help you better prepare for your PAN application, these are the documents that the Income Tax Department expect you to submit for your PAN to be processed.

Proof of Identity

Your proof of identity is one of the most crucial evidentiary documents you need to provide the ITD in relation to your application for a Permanent Account Number. This essentially sets the tone for all other data that will form the core of your personal databank at the Income Tax Department.

The following documents should be furnished in its original copy.

  • Certificate of Identity which has been appropriately signed and duly authenticated by the Member of the Legislative Assembly or Parliament, a Gazetted Officer, or a Municipal Councilor
  • Bank Certificate which bears the official letter head of the branch of the bank where you maintain the said bank account; this should be duly certified by authorized bank issuing officer or bank representative complete with his or her name and official stamp; the Bank Certificate should also bear a certified and verifiable bank account number as well as the certified photograph of the owner of the said bank account

The following documents require only a photocopy for submission. However, it is best to keep the original with you in the event that the ITD will ask for comparison purposes.

  • Aadhaar Card that is issued and duly certified by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Any photo ID card that is issued by the Central or State Government or Public sector undertaking
  • Arm’s license
  • Central government-issued Health Scheme Card
  • Contributory Health Scheme photo card for those who were formerly in the military service
  • Elector’s photo ID card
  • Pensioner card that bears the photo of the applicant
  • Ration card that bears the photo of the applicant
  • Voter’s ID card

The following documents should also be furnished in photo copies only. However, they should have a validity that is not longer than 3 months on application date.

  • Driver’s License
  • Passport

Proof of Date of Birth

The PAN applicant’s date of birth establishes the age of the applicant and can have meaningful implications in labor practices. As such, it is a crucial piece of information needed by the Income Tax Department for PAN processing. The following documents are required to validate your date of birth. Only photocopies of these are required.

  • Aadhaar Card that is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Birth Certificate that is issued by a Municipal Authority
  • Domicile Certificate that is issued by the Government
  • Marriage Certificate that is issued by the Registrar of Marriages
  • Matriculation Certificate
  • Pension Payment Order
  • Sworn Affidavit before a Magistrate that expressly states the date of birth and issued by the Government

The following documents should also be furnished in photocopies only. However, they should have a validity of not more than 3 months on application date.

  • Driver’s License
  • Passport

Proof of Residence Address

Establishing the veracity of one’s residential address is crucial as the PAN card will be sent directly to this address. The following documents as proof of your residence address are required in their original forms.

  • Certificate of Identity that is signed and properly authenticated by a Member of the Legislative Assembly or the Parliament, a Gazetted Officer, or a Municipal Councilor
  • Original Employer’s Certificate

The following documents may be submitted in photocopies only.

  • Aadhaar Card that is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Allotment letter of accommodation issue by the State or Central Government with the Letter having a validity of not older than 3 years at the time of application
  • Document of property registration
  • Domicile Certificate issued by the Government
  • Elector’s photo ID card
  • Post office passbook that bears the applicant’s complete address
  • Property Tax Assessment Order latest copy

The following documents may be submitted in photocopies only. However, they should also have a validity of not more than 3 months on application date.

  • Driver’s License
  • Passport
  • Passport of your spouse, if any
  • Bank statement of account of passbook
  • Broadband internet connection bill
  • Consumer Gas Connection Card
  • Credit card statement
  • Electric bill
  • Landline telephone bill
  • Piped gas bill
  • Statement of Depository Account
  • Water bill

Proof of Office or Business Address

Companies and firms are also required by law to have their own Permanent Account Number. The following documents in their photo copied forms can be submitted to the Income Tax Department for processing of the PAN application.

  • Credit card statement that bears the complete business address of the firm or company
  • Bank account statement that bears the complete business address of the firm or company
  • Electric bill that bears the complete business address of the firm or company
  • Telephone bill that bears the complete business address of the firm or company
  • Depository account statement that bears the complete business address of the firm or company

The following document is also expected to be submitted to the Income Tax Department in its photo copied form. Moreover, its validity should not be more than 3 months on application date.
