Two of the most important pieces of documents in India are the PAN Card and the Aadhaar Card. The former is geared primarily for tax purposes as well as for creating a database about the card-holder’s financial, business, and economic activities as recognized by the Income Tax Department. The Aadhaar Card, on the other hand, is a voluntary national identity system issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India as a means for the provision of socialized welfare programs. The good news is that it is now very easy to link your Aadhaar Card to your PAN Card. You only need 3 very simple steps to link your PAN Card with Aadhaar.

Step 1 – Log onto the Income Tax Department’s e-Filling Portal

The very first step is to log onto the e-Filing portal of the Income Tax Department. On the Home Page, look at the Services section and click on the link that reads “Link Aadhaar”. Doing so will open a new webpage.

Step 2 – Furnish the Required Information

On the new webpage, you will be asked to furnish the online form with information about your PAN and Aadhaar numbers. There are 10 digits on your PAN and 12 numbers on the Aadhaar Card. It is imperative to write the information being asked on the form as it is written or printed on your Aadhaar Card to help avoid any potential mismatch in information. As much as possible, have both cards with you when performing the linking process. A Captcha screen will pop out to make sure that you are not a robot hacking into the system. Answer the Captcha and if everything goes well, you will be directed to click on the Submit button.

Step 3 – Wait for an Acknowledgment and Confirmation

The UIAI will verify the information that you have entered. If there is a minor discrepancy in the information you submitted, you will be sent a One-Time Password to the email address or mobile number that you put into the form. Use this to authenticate the request. If the discrepancy is major, the linking of your Aadhaar Card to your PAN will fail and you will be instructed to change the conflicting information in either the Aadhaar or the PAN database. If, however, everything went smoothly, you’ll receive notification that the linking has been successfully completed.

It is easy to link your Aadhaar Card to your PAN Card. The important thing is to use exactly the same data on your Aadhaar during the linking process.
